When my father died, and we were left alone in Jersey, I was quite a long time deciding whether I would go in for singing professionally or try painting. For this he was prepared; but he was not prepared for the almost insurmountable obstacles which it presented. The doctor and another man were by his bedside when they entered the room, and there were writing materials which had evidently been used close at hand.
